Kombucha Instructions

First and foremost, you'll need a scoby! If you don't yet have a scoby, you can purchase one from my  Etsy shop.

Okay, so you have your own SCOBY, now what? Just follow these simple instructions and you'll be brewing your very own batch of kombucha in no time!

What You Will Need:

5 Organic Black Tea bags (standard size)
1/2 cup of Organic cane sugar
1/2 Gallon sized glass jar. Do not use plastic!
1/2 Gallon of distilled water. You can also boil tap water & let it cool and then use it for brewing.
1/4 cup distilled white vinegar (only needed for first batch, after this first batch, you can use a portion of your brewed kombucha tea as the starter.)

1. Bring your water to a boil in a large pot on your stove. Once its boiling, add the tea bags and let them steep for a while.
2. While the water is still warm, remove the tea bags and add the sugar, stirring with a wooden spoon to dissolve the sugar, Never use metal!
3. Cover with lid and let cool completely to room temperature.
4. Pour tea into your glass jar and add the scoby & starter/vinegar to the jar.
5. Cover with a paper towel (or cheese cloth, coffee filter, etc.) and secure with a rubber band

Now you wait! Brewing time varies, but usually takes around 7-10 days! Now you will just perform a taste test on the 7th day. If it tastes too sweet, recover and let sit for a few more days and try again.

Now on your next batch, you can double up the ingredients and use 1 cup of starter tea from the batch you just made to make a full gallon of kombucha next time! :)

Enjoy!

  1. After you cover with the paper towel, cheesecloth or coffee filter, are you keeping this at room temperature or refrigerating it? Thanks for your detailed steps!
